If you’ve ever set a fitness goal or attended a boot camp, you’ll get where I’m coming from when I say ‘building wealth is just like running a marathon’.
You start with the goal, a desire to achieve something that you just can’t shake (whether it’s the distance you want to nail, a timeframe you want to push yourself to achieve, or getting that bikini bod ready for your wedding). You’ve then got to look at where you are now in relation to the end game, and build a plan for closing that gap.
When I ran my first marathon, I was about ‘15km fit’.
I was running regularly and had completed a bunch of half-marathons over the previous few years. Of course, there was no way I could just decide to run 42.2kms and head out the next day to achieve it. I spoke to my running coach at the time, and together we built a 6-month program that would enable me to get from comfortably running 15kms to being able to manage the full marathon distance.
The journey wasn’t smooth sailing, I had ongoing ITB issues and twisted my ankle 6 weeks out from the main event.
However, my plan to achieve this goal included an appropriate diet, regular massage and physio, and the 3-4 running sessions I’d do per week were supported by a weight training and yoga session. It also involved surrounding myself with the right people, I got my friends, family and colleagues on board to support me, and trained with running buddies, my coach, and my triathlon group. Because of all this, the ankle injury was but a blip on the radar. All of the preparation I had done up to that point, along with rest and extra physio meant I ended up running what has now become that fastest marathon I’ve (so far) ever run!
To do something really well and successfully smash a goal, this is what it takes. A great plan, the discipline and accountability to stick your plan, and the right people around you to both advise you and support you as you progress.
Just like in my marathon experience, our journey to wealth creation hasn’t been without its hiccups. Unexpected things happen all the time, and having our Financial Coach (thanks, Bec – you’re a legend), along with our ‘get rich slow’ plan and the support of the WE community around us has meant that we’ve still been able to get there.
